The story of the FC Barcelona academy

Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper opened in 2006 in Sant Joan Despi and centralised the FC Barcelona training operation across senior, reserve and academy levels. The academy itself, La Masia, originally lived in a converted farmhouse next to the old Camp Nou from 1979, before moving to a new building at the Ciutat Esportiva in 2011. La Masia is widely considered the most influential football academy in the world. Its most famous demonstration of strength came at the 2010 Ballon d Or, where all three finalists, Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, had grown up at the club. That core, alongside Sergio Busquets, Carles Puyol, Pedro and Jordi Alba, formed the spine of the most successful era in club history and of the dominant Spain national team. More recent graduates including Pedri, Gavi and Lamine Yamal show the production line is still working.
